Visiting Dragonstone

Any Game of Thrones fans out there?

On a recent trip to the north coast of Spain we visited San Juan de Gaztelugatxe.

San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is a small islet connected to the mainland by a stone bridge and is the real-life location of Dragonstone in Game of Thrones.

Located off the coast of Spain in the Basque Country, it features a 10th-century hermitage at the top of the island. The iconic zigzag staircase leading up to the hermitage was featured in the series as Daenerys Targaryen's ancestral home, Dragonstone.

While Gaztelugatxe gained fame from Game of Thrones, the area also offers beautiful coastal scenery and hiking trails.

The drive to the site is, as one would expect, a long narrow roadway with plenty of twists and turns. Eventually, you arrive at the vistor’s center and parking area.

During peak times of the tourist season, you are required to make a reservation to visit the hermitage, however, at the time we visited no reservation was required.

The walk to and from the hermitage is not easy as steep and uneven walkways make you earn your eventual prize of making it to the end.

No dragons were spotted however and Daenerys Targaryen was not in residence.

Overall, it was an arduous but fulfilling day.
